Hi there,
I did bandage her up last night as I said and just got back from the vet and yes it was broken just below the front knee. Going in the pen this morning and seeing her with her head laying on the ground I pretty knew then it was broken. That is always a sure sign something is definately wrong in a bad way. He put a cast on and said we'll take it off in about 4 weeks. She was wiggling her little tail after we got home which I haven't seen the past two days and she just laid on my lap so calm and still the whole time he was putting it on, the vet even asked her if she was sleeping. She only let out two little cries the whole time. Poor little thing! Thanks for all your help!

If it is as swollen as you say, it is most likely a break. She be crying when it the leg is moved because the bones be rubbing againt each other at the break. She probably also feeling some numbness down there.

That is a good location for a break to happen. I had a nice doe in the past that broke her leg there. Same symptoms occured as yours. I put a splint on it and took to vet. He said broken below the knee. Fortunately in a spot where it can heal back. He put the leg in a cast. She had to keep it for 3 or 4 weeks from what I remember. After he removed the cast, the leg looked a little bent and horrible and the doe could hardly walk on it. But after a few months the leg rehabilitated and looked normal. The doe walked normally again.

If the painful area is between her knee and fetlock she may very well have a broken leg. She probably wouldn't have a fever due to a broken or sprained leg. I would splint it and see if she improves in a day or two. If not its time for a vet before it is too late to set it properly if it needs setting.

Her knee bends ok without any grating feeling. Actually while she is hobbling around it swings back and forth and does seem to bother her. I think it's more of a problem between her knee and the dew claws-the whole area is swollen. Do you think she would have a temp if it were broken from the pain? I haven't checked her temp. I can touch to about my middle knuckle with my thumb on her other front leg and only to just past the tip of my finger on the bad one.

Wrap it slightly snug. It would be good if you padded it some with a towel or such. That way it is hard to wrap too tight and offers more support. No they don't cry much even with a very bad break. Does the joint bend okay? when you bend it do you feel grating? If so this may point towards a break.

Well, I went and took a closer look and I was wrong about the swelling, it doesn't seem to be reduced at all. But the pain seems to have moved a little which would point me towards a bad sprain. As I said earlier it was by her dew claws, now it is at the knee and a little below, which is where it is swollen. She did cry a little while I was checking it out. I checked her hoof around the hairline, between her toes and the dew claws-I saw no sign of any injury or infection. She would really be crying all the time if she broke it wouldn't she? She doesn't make a peep unless you touch it. She doesn't use teh leg at all while moving around but again does place it very gently down without pressure while standing and uses it VERY little for weight exchange.
I do have vet wrap-how tight do I want to make it?

Thanks I'll take a closer look where you said and see if I should call my vet.

Thanks again!

I am willing to bet she just twisted, bruised or sprained it. You can splint it or vetwrap it for support and protection. A vet would xray and cast it if it is broken, but it doesn't really sound broken to me. Look very closely for a wound around her dew claws and the top of her hoof where the hair meets the hoofwall. Look between her toes for a wound or infection. If you are going to have a vet be able to do anything you need to call pretty soon. But likely it will heal on its own.

My little doe was limping the other night when I went out to check on them and I checked out her leg, squeezed it as I went along and she didn't cry or flinch or anything but the leg was kinda swollen and she wouldn't use it. She can put some pressure on it now and again when she goes to turn but normally holds it up when walking. Sometimes will put it up and down when standing. Looks a little less swollen but there is still noticable difference. What do I do for her. She seems to flinch now down by her dew claws-do you think it is broken? What will/should the vet do for her?
