Hi,

The only thing I can add to this thread is that somewhere down the line I read that pumpkins in small amounts act as a dewormer. I've have never confirmed this and cannot remember where I read it. I believe it came off a holistic web site. But as was mentioned in these posts below, small amounts only when changing or adding new feeds.

Best regards, GP

I feed all of my goats, bucks, does and wethers grain according to their needs. The wethers and bucks get alot less than the does as they don't need it as much They don't nurse kids!). My hay quality isn't always top notch (its fresh but still just a grass hay) and a bit of grain makes up for that. At 1 year old goats are still very actively growing and will continue to grow until they are 3. Since Lee Ann has been feeding a small amount of grain for a year there is no real reason not to continue. Her nubian wethers probably weigh over 100 pounds by now and may get to close to 200 pounds at maturity. A cup of grain morning and night is barely a snack for them where for my pygmies and your nigerian dwarves it would be a huge meal!

I've heard that it isn't good to give whethers grain because it could cause stones in their urinary track. Is that true? I don't feed grain. I'll tell you what though... they sure do love oyster crackers!

I would keep giving the grain too. The little bit of broccoli won't do any harm either. Large amounts of broccoli (I mean LARGE amounts) can block iodine absorption. Pumpkin is okay too in small portions, no more than a half a cup to cup at a time. All treats in strict moderation, any significant change in diet can cause severe digestive disease.

FYI about the grain and staying warm, eating lots of nutritious hay goes much further in keeping a goats warm (or horses or any other livestock for that matter). It is the digestive microbes action and the fermentation of roughage in the rumen and intestines that produces more heat than the digestion of or energy contained in grain.

If you are not providing a good balanced loose mineral you need to do that too. Look for one with 2 to 1 calcium to phosphorus ratio and 900 to 1800 ppm copper and 3000 to 4000 ppm zinc. Do not trust that a goat mineral has this, CHECK THE LABEL. A beef cattle mineral can be a very good substitute. Most farm land where hay is grown and pasturelands are very deficient in trace minerals. It is assumed by feed manufacturers that the farmer will make available an appropriate mineral and salt supplement.

I gave my wethered nubians which are now 1 year old, a couple florets of broccoli twice in a 2 months span. When my vet came to visit to give them their first shots I mentioned this and she said not to give them anything but their hay. To even stop giving them the 1 cup each of honey grain in the morning and at night. I stopped giving them the broccoli because I didn't know if it would harm them but won't stop the grain, it is beginning to get cold and I think they need the extra energy. What do you think about the broccoli? What do you think about pumpkins. I know deer will eat it can goats? I don't want to make them sick. Because of my vet the only snack they get is a slice of bread once in awhile.
