No, the horse can't get goat lice. Lice are species specific. You can't get them either, poultry don't share theirs, etc. etc. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

He could have lice, part the hair on his back look for very small (like a pin head) flattish light brown insect you can also look for the white oval eggs attached to the hair shafts. The ivermectin only works against lice if given by injection or if you use the pour on. It is not especially effective against lice if given orally. Or you can use any flea spray mean for cats and dogs, CoRal livestock powder, a synergized Lice pour on for cattle (I like this one personally). Treat all of the goats, change the bedding in their sleeping areas. Mineral deficiencies can also cause irritated itchy skin. A loose mineral blend with good levels of selenium, copper (abbout 800 to 1200 ppm) and especially zinc (about 3000 ppm)is important to a healthy coat and skin. |

My 4 year old wether has never had a skin problem unitl now. he was licking one area of his shoulder this past week and now there are three small bloody areas. The rest of his skin is a bit sensitve and when I touch it he wiggles his skin. I put antibiotic ointment on the sores, but wonder if he has picked up Lice or something else. We have had very dry hot weather all summer and even now in October it is unseasonably warm and still very dry. What could this be? I have heard that if a goat has contracted lice that 2 doses of ivomec 2 weeks apart will kill it. Is that true? I started deworming him last year with ivomec on a regular basis. The other 2 goats I have seem fine. |
