Maggie:

Thanks so much for all of this info.
It will be put to good use. "S"

Also good to know the gums do have a diagnostic use.

Again you have answered some questions and have helped me.

Thank you so much

Musosal membranes, gums, inner eyelids, inner surface of vulva and inner surface of rectum. Sorry to confuse! The eyelids, vulva and rectum are not pigmented, sometimes the oral membranes are. Now the gums do have a very good diagnostic use but its a test for hydration (more accurate than tenting the skin). Press the gum firmly but briefly at the base of the teeth and see how long it takes for the color to return. Almost too fast to see is normal hydration, 1 second is mild dehydration, 2 seconds or longer means the goat is dangerously dehydrated.

Maggie: My normal is to check the eye lid not sure why all of a sudden I decided to check the gum also. "S"

Phew so I must be good all the goats eye lids are nice and pink. It just confused me to find the gum white.

Ok showing some lack of knowledge. What and were is the mucusal tissue you spoke of? Are you speaking still of the inner surface of the vulva?

Cindy great plan to read all post on this great site. Also printing up allot of the info has really helped me. I now have two folders full of info. "S" Just none on white gums. "go figure"

Thanks to the both of you for your replies. Will check back again for other updates.

I've had my goats for almost exactly a year now and the things I know now that I didn't know then are astounding. They teach you a lot- sometimes really quickly. I've learned a ton of stuff from this site and from reading and experiencing it for myself. One thing that helped me a lot was to read just about anything you haven't read on here before - like if a new topic comes up see what it is. Don't say I don't have that problem cause someday you might and you'll save a lot of precious time to help them if you already know what to do from others experiences. That has been a blessing on my farm that I took the time to read and follow through to the end (good or bad) about others experiences. And of course writing in a panic about something new happening and what to do with a call also into the vet to see who can help the fastest. Sometimes it's scarey and even a little thing you do could help buy some time before the whole picture is figured out.
This site is great and so glad I found it. Maggie spends a great deal of time helping us all out-she's so helpful SHE"S GREAT!

Gum color is not a good indication of anemia. Many dark skinned goats have grayish colored mouths. Look at the eyelid color and you can also look at the inner surface of the vulva... You need to look at mucusal tissue that doesn't have any pigment.

Cindy: Their tongue color is normal color. Just strange to see the gums so white and the eyelids nice and pink.

Figures they would teach me yet another new item. LOL

How is the tongue color? Some of mine have gums a little dull than others but their tongues are still pink along with the eyelids. I'm no expert though.

Yep another question:
I notice some of my Does have dull gums, but their eye lids are pink.

Ok being confused I thought this was the way to tell of there was a over load of worms.
But if one is pink and the other dull am I still looking at a over load of worms?

Again thanks for info provided
