One of mine has a really thick coat. I'm not too worried about him. The other 2 don't seem to have such a thick coat though. I got them little dog coats just in case. I'd rather have them on hand if I think they need them then not have them at all. Oh, and yes... they have great shelter to keep drafts and the weather out. I'm not worried about that. These are my first babies and first winter with them. I'm sure I'm just being a little paranoid! |

My boers sleep outside on the ground when the temps are in the 20's and 30's. If it were a single goat alone, I'd worry, but if they have a dry, draft free place where they can snuggle together, they'll keep each other warm. I've had newborn babies sleeping in the barnwhile their moms are out grazing when temps were in the 20's during the day. |

I am going to put my two cents in here. Do your babies have a fuzzy under coat? I had a young nubian wether last year at about the same age range and he develpoed a beautiful thick undercoat and was fine. I also had a young fair goat that was shaven at the end of august just before I brought him home and he did fine also by winter. It is very important to have housing that blocks drafts and all the weather. I am a worry wart when it comes to my boys, but seeing that undercoat was quite comforting. As Barbara said, do what you think is best. |

I have used cut off socks on new babies when it was sub-zero weather on goats 4-5 months old you should not really need them but you do what you think is best for your goats you are caring for them and no better than I if they need extra warmth but no it is not silly at all. OK... this may sound silly but it's starting to get in the 20s-30s at night. My 3 whethers (4-6 months) have lots of straw and cuddle up together. The lady I got them from said since they don't have their mom to keep them warm when it is this cold that we should get coats for them. Any suggestions? |
