The sulfa drug is an oral drug, given by drench. Brand names are Sulmet or Albon 12.5% Drinking Water solution. They are labeled for use in cattle and poultry. For goat you do not add it to the drinking water, you dose full strength each individual goat. The dose for treating coccidia is 1 cc per 5 pounds the first day, then 1 cc per 10 pounds for 4 more days. You can then give it once a week until tehy kids are 4 to 6 months old for prevention if you have a problem with coccidia. If you provide a good loose mineral for your goats at all times you will have much less problems with parasites, respiratory disease, kidding and fertility problems, skin and hoof problems and mastitis. Look for one with 2 to 1 ratio of calcium to phosphorus and 900 to 1800 ppm copper, 3000 to 5000 ppm zinc. Do not feed anything labeled for sheep and goat, these products DO NOT have enough copper for goats to do well. The Fiasco Farm website also has a very good medications chart with proper doses for many meds given to goats. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

The dose for ivermectin is 1 cc per 25 to 30 pounds so you are probably underdosing and making resistant worms. Increase the doe appropriately. You may be deworming way to often too, the more you deworm the faster the worms become resistant. I deworm 3 to 4 times a year. Too bad about the barn.... Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

For goat producers that pasture breed and aren't sure of breeding dates you may want to think about boostering the CDT every 6 months. That keeps the antibodies high in the does which will keep them high in the colostrum. Deworm teh does that day they kid or the day after, worms become more active right after kidding. Start vaccinating kids at 8 weeks, 4 weeks is still too early, they don't develop their immune system until 8 to 10 week old. A goat has to have a functioning immune system for a vaccine to have any effect. Booster kids twice more at 3 week intervals. Begin deworming kids at 8 to 10 weeks, watch for diarrhea and treat for coccidia with a sulfa drug if necessary. Diarrhea in kids 3 weeks and older is most often from coccidia, regular dewormers don't kill coccidia. If the does are in good flesh they don't need any feed changes until after they kid. Then they would benefit form more grain, or better hay such as alfalfa. It is when a doe is feeding kids that they have the most drain on their bodies and good nutrition is a must, they are TRULY eating for many mouths at that time. The Fiasco Farm website at www.fiascofarm.com has very good information and time tables of things to do when a doe is expecting. If you plan on continuing pasture breeding you amy want to look into a breeding marking harness for the buck. These harnesses hold a colored block of marking paint to the chest of the buck. When he has bred a doe she will be "colored" by the crayon and you can more accurately know when she has been bred and then will be able to better predict when she will kid.
