Nuflor is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It is by prescription only from your vet. Many people have very good results using it for pneumonia, salmonella and e. coli and other bacterial infections. The dose is 3 cc per 50 pounds by SQ injection every 4 days or 3.5 cc per 100 pounds by IM injection every 2 days.

If you don't have a vet who will sell you drugs many people have good results with Tylan 200 (tylosin) and it is over the counter. The dose for it is 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection once a day.

Most of the time if a goats does not have a fever, it does nat have a bacterial infection and giving antibiotics is useless. Antibiotics can kill the rumen and intestinal microbes, so a probiotic should be given when treating with antibiotics. Many goats that off feed at first are developing a respiratory infection.

Hi,

I'm getting into this late but wanted to at least share some opinion if it will help. Often it is very easy to "overtreat" a goat and not really be attending to the actual problem. One of the most common problems I have run into is a goat that will not eat or whose appetite has suddenly decreased. I'm sure every one of us here knows the scenario: the goat who always will knock you down to get to food suddenly just standing there showing little interest...

In the past month or so I've had two of these. I know somehow it was weather related...try milking when you have to take the goat outside (because the other goats are only to eager) and milk when the wind is blowing 50 mph, it's about 10 degrees and it is snowing. The very next day this goat acted "off". No interest in food from an otherwise ravenous eater. The first thing I've done each time now is get Nuflor (Florfenicol) and vitamin B12. The Nuflor works quickly on respiratory ailments (even when it doesn't appear to be respiratory) and the B12 somehow fuels the goats appetite. Maybe I've been lucky or maybe the planets have been aligned right...each time it has brought them back. And believe me, there are many times when I wish I would have administered Nuflor and didn't and the outcome was unsuccessful. Between Nuflor and the B12, my "saves" have greatly increased. The other thing I always try with a goat that shows little interest in food is to quarter a navel orange and feed this peel and all...bananas peel and all won't hurt them either.

Hope this helps, best regards, GP

It feels so terrible to go through that with your babies. I know it breaks your heart. I am treating one of my little guys with polio. He's almost pulled through it but only because of the help of Maggie and the others on here. I would just suggest to follow their directions to the "T". Wishing you and your goat the best.

Thank you - i'm just so worried about her, and hate the fact that i can't take off anymore work - so i'm stuck here till 3:30-at least the hubby is at home with her :-)

I just gave her one dose of the wormer yesterday afternoon. I've been giving her probios daily, along with nutri-drench. She has been living in my kitchen since this all happened, so is nice and warm - and i still offer her warm water. I've tried making her want more water by adding, honey, molelasses, warm, cool, etc. up untill the last 2 days she drank plenty of water - just these last two days are not so much.

Her general appearance is to me as though she is "druged" and sedated - but shes not. Before the last couple of days it didn't seem so much, but now, the only time she really seems to have that alive-little-bit-of-energy-look is when i'm handfeeding her some food that she loves ( it's been apples lately).

I'm worried about my little girl. Thanks again !

Did you worm her once or twice? I would follow up with another dose of ivomec. Make sure you give enough. It is better to give a little more then alittle less.
Make sure she stays hydrated. Mix some molasses and corn oil with a little water to thin it. She should gulp this down. If it is cold in your area give it to her VERY warm. You can also fill up a bucket of hot water and put it in her stall, they love hot water when it is cold outside.
It wouldn't hurt to give her a dose of probias, to keep her rumen functioning properly.
I hope this helps some til Maggie gets on here.
Good Luck
Dawn

Keep an eye on her and wait for some one who knows more than me to get on line and post suggestions. Keep checking back here. meanwhile if you can get some electrolytes paste for horses and some paste also for horses that will restore the beneficial bacteria in her stomach. Sometimes wormers will kill off this bacteria. Also the death of a lot of parasites at once will be toxic to the good stuff in her stomach. Ask the horse vet in your area how he would treat the same symptoms in a horse. Or better... a cow. Sometimes my Vet will offer suggestions for an animal he knows about that will help.

Ok, i wormed her with horse Ivermectin paste at 3 x the horse dose per weight. I also got a Sweetlix block for her and my other goat.

I don't see much inprovement over the last couple of days - and what i do see i'm not quite sure if i'm imagining it or not, sometimes she seems to be doing worse ( kind dazed, and just out of it) and at other times she seems to be doing a bit better. BUT - this am when i got up at 5:30am there was no pee or poop, and my hubby just called me and i asked about it, and still nothing - it's now 10:15am - this can't be good, this is just tearing at my heart, and the worst part is i can't even find a vet in the area that would even look at her - even if i bring her to them - they all said i'd have better luck asking fellow goat owners.

I want her to get better and will do anything i must, but if she gets worse, or won't get better, it's not fair to her to keep her going - i'm really worried about her. Oh, and her appitite has slowed some more - she will eat apples, carrots and spinich on her own( but prefers me to hand feed it) but will hardly touch her hay, alfalfa pelets, and water(although she will eat some when i hand feed it too)

Is this hopeless ? Am i doing the right thing ? What could this be ? What are the chances of her pulling through this ? Thanks again ~
