Check your minerals for copper content, be sure it is 900 to 1800 ppm. You can give A,D and E`as injectables or oral meds. You are already supplementing selenium but if you are doing it once a year you may need to go to twice or even 3 times a year. you can have blood drawn on a number of them to check blood selenium and to an extent blood copper levels... Have fecal samples run on the stunted kids too, sometims a subclinical case of coccidia causes stunting... Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

They don't have worms. We follow a worming program very carefully. They all have access to Purina goat mineral at all times and have since 2weeks after birth. We do give BoSe and they have all recieved their doses. Some of the babies are a product of too close of breeding, not very many though. And yes, some of the does were only about 16 months when they kidded. How can we increase their A,D,E intake? And their copper and selenium intake? |

What minerals do they have? Have you checked for worms? Both mineral deficiency and worms can cause stunting. Might also be sure they get adequate A, D, and E vitamins, especially if they have to stay in again this winter. You are in a selenium deficient and copper deficient area how much copper does your mineral have? is it a block or loose? Do you give BoSe? it is unlikely any mineral or feed will have enough selenium. Don't know if these little ones will grow to normal size at the normal time but they might later. Inbreeding can cause stunting too, how carefully were these does bred? Very young mothers can cause stunting in kids... Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

We had our first kidding last March and it went OK. The only problem was that we bought the does pregnant in December and brought them up the mountain and in March we started getting snow and it didn't stop until May. We brought the does in at the beginning of March when they were due and then they stayed in the barn until the end of May when the snow had melted off and the freezing was over. Now, some of our kids from that kidding are VERY SMALL! They look as if they are only 4-6 months old while others are getting nice and big. The kids are almost 10 months old and they are like midgets! What can we do to help them grow to a normal size? We wanted to breed them at 14 months but it doesn't look like they will ever be big enough. They have plenty of food and minerals, just some grew to a normal size, and some didn't. Please help! |
