Cindy,
Ringworm is a fungus infection and yes it is contagious as Alex posted.
Treatment is with an anti-fungal medicine or can use 7% iodine tincture. Captan is an anti-fungal used on fruits and vegetables. It is non-toxic and is safe to put on goats. If the medicine the vet does not help much there is a spray called "Foot Rot & Ringworm Spray" by AgriLabs is very good for ringworm. Jeffers carry it.

As expressed before, proper minerals with abundance of copper is the key for prevention.

Alex,

It looks like you called it correctly. Good job! I appreciate your enthusiastic input on this site. Goat herding is a challenging and most often rewarding endeavor for all of us. Occasionally, people take our individual attempts to participate in any conversation the wrong way; unfortunately, e-mail is a very poor method of communicating one's empathy, sympathy or response to another. If you ever get a chance, give me a call 304-722-3658 or e-mail me on this site.

Keep up your hard work, young man.

My vet told me it's ring worm and will go away with warm weather but could try to treat it with myconisol or vagisil. I bought some vagasil and will let you know how it goes. He said it will be very hard to get rid of. I was also told it can be treated with iodine but not to get it eye at all or could cause blindness. Her nose is so crusted now. The vet said to treat for two weeks-that should be fun considering she hates us now after all the shots.

Cindy have you tried just dropping 1cc of Biomycin in her eye once a day and clean the area around the eye with Listerene twice a day.

That looks similar to what my kids got during the winter months for two years in a row. Hair loss around the eye with crusty areas forming. I think I had spoke to my vet about it in the past. It is of viral nature. I do not have any cases of it this winter. I had been persistent about putting out the loose mineral. Using the Sweetlix meatmaker 16:8 mineral.

Not sure if it was the mineral that prevented it or the very dry weather we had eradicated the virus in some way.

It was a battle trying to clear up the goats skin. I first cleaned the area (except next to the eye)by wiping with alcohol on a tissue. Then again used a tissue to pat on iodine(again careful to keep the med out of the eye). With repeated daily treatment and time, I had good results.

Also I gave daily vitamin E gel caps to promote the skin healing. Vitamin E is necessary for skin health.

So just curious, how much copper is in your minerals? Do you use a block or loose? Even with "adequate" copper in a block your goats may not be getting enough. Goats don't use blocks well, they can't lick enough to get what they need. Have you tried just using a zinc ozide ointment? Sometimes "skin cruddies" are a zinc deficiency and using a zinc oxide based ointment (baby diaper rash ointment is nearly 100 percent zinc oxide ointment and pretty cheap).

Gave her a 5 day round of Bio-M and it didn't seem to do anything. We waited about 2-3 days and started the penicillin for 4 days but it didn't seem to be doing anything either so instead of keep giving her shots for nothing we stopped. These were both SQ injections. Her other eye looks ok - may be starting in the corner a little. Her nose does seem to have dry "snot" in the corners every once and a while. Is this something bad. I have another goat of mine who gets it all the time-she's like my child-at least she thinks so.
This doe doesn't seem to have any cloudiness and we also did treat her with ivomec SQ twice (several days apart)before starting meds incase it was some sort of worm or something.
Someone else mentioned speculum (?) eye from copper deficiency?-but I swear we have more than enough accordingly to the label.
She is a very beautiful girl-now if I could only see her whole beauty getting that eye to clear up it would be great. I feel so bad for her but it does seem to affect her too much. The one day I looked at it and it did appear quite red right along the eyelash line like an infection but that has cleared and it's just these returning "scabs" for a lack of a better word.
Hope I answered everybody's questions. Sorry it took so long to reply we started kidding and it takes so long to get those babies dry! and I never saw a reply until I came on here to look.
Thanks for everyone's input-this problem seems to be dragging on forever.

What a pretty goat! Am I seeing the same skin discoloration on the nose??? Is the texture bumby and flaky??? My horse's face looks like this, its from sunburn. It may aslo be warts. The eye doesn't look cloudy to me, has it been?

Did you give the meds in her eye or by injection? this looks like irritation from the meds and tearing to me. her eye looks prety good. Check to be sure her eyelashes are not iritating the eyeball, this condition is called entropion and can be fixed with a simple surgical procedure. Is it just one eye or both? Biomycin and penicillin cancel each other out....

looks a little like ring-worm. Im not 100% sure but it does look like ring-worm. I have seen it in cows but never in goats yet. Keep her away from others because if it is ring-worm it will spread it to your whole herd. Wear gloves you can get it and it hurts so much!!!
