They both have cystic ovaries, and this behavior will continue. If you want you can have them spayed and this will likely stop. When spaying goats, just the ovaries are removed but that should solve the problem. They will then be more like wethers. Cystic does usually won't get pregnant, either, their ovaries don't release the eggs. There is some relationship between copper deficiency and cycstic ovaries but once the does are cycstic it is hard to reverse it. Maggie Leman Goat 911 Capri Medic

I have two pygmy doe's that are driving me and all the goats in the barn crazy. They think they are bucks. The first one is Moonie (Moonbeam), she is eight and she has been doing this for several years but not as bad as this year(2006). The weather has kept everyone in the barn so that's probably part of it. The second one is Silver, she is seven and she just started this over the summer. I treated Moonie and her sister Mary for this a few years ago with lutalyse and oxytocin (I think thats the combination, I can't really remember exactly, it's been years) to try and get their hormones straightened out. We went through two rounds of that and it never worked. Mary has since passed on (during a mastectomy operation) and Moonie and Silver are getting so bad that I am having to keep them penned all the time. If it keeps up, I'm considering putting them down. I really love these girls, but they are starting to be a major problem in the herd. Moonie is butting and pushing all the other girls around, she get's awfully rough. Now Silver is starting to get just as rough. Also, I tried to breed the two last year and neither one took. They were in the pen with the buck for several weeks at different times and both were in season but neither one got pregnant. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix my "bucky" girls would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, JC |
