Congrats on the the quads. Great mom instincts just stepping in there without thought and getting all that stuff out of the airway. Now that is love and is very commendable. Best wishes to mom and all those little kids and to you and yours!

Also I did want to say also that I completely agree with Paul about the dehorning. we've heard that in Missouri that all wethers now need to be dehorned for show. I guess we won't be selling any wethers for show! Even had someone offer to come do it for for free. I just can't torture them like that-how horrible!

Hi Paul
I raise regestered nubian does and bucks so i have to dehorn to show and i have had goats with horns and had northing come up but when i started to intduce my nubians they thougth they could rule with horns but i had to sell i had over 1,000 dallors in stock (3 animals) and there was no way a 100.00 goat was goiong to hurt them! I dissagree with you horns do help keep an animal cooler but with the right amount of shade you don't need horns. I also have boers and dehorn. You may dissargee but i know what they can do with horns i have seen cows kill a another herd mate by just hitting a fly and stabbing another. So just so i can sleep at night i dehorn. I have 1 doe that is our queen and would kill another goat if she had horns!!!

None of our goats are dehorned and we have never had a problem even when they eat out of a 12 foot trough and assume each one owns it. They may slam each other with their heads but we have never had anyone impaled on the tip of a horn. The horn is used for temperature regulation and make great handles. If you have been following 911 and have seen the tragedies involved with disbudding it is hard to imagine why anyone would do this to a goat. Considering that a great preponderance of goat owners are amateurs, at best, I cannot imagine doing this to a poor goat. We have Boer's and I can imagine that something like a Kiko would be more likely to impale but I would never dehorn a Boer. Don't do it.

Tina

If you ever want to talk or have any questions (i may not have all the answers) but if you wanted to talk about our kids (goats!!!) and about any thing my number is 1-506-433-1970.
Good job i think about you and how good of a person you must be. I have alot of dairy cow blood in me (Family are mostly farmers) and still have some feelings for the poor cows that have to be shiped and the calves that are going to be veal
But i have 2 bucks i have to disbud tomorrow and arn'y feeling to good at all. I know they know what they are doing but when they yell when the iron is placed on their head i feel so mean but i tell me self it's better then them killing another goat after i sell them. Talk to you later

Thank you, I still cry when I think of Hoppy. She was so special but I still have her mama and she is very happy now and that is great! Reba our star..... has taken to her four babies in the last few hours since passing her afterbirth. I think she just wanted to get that out of the way. She has been feeding them all, and I am helping with milking her and adding it to the milk replacement recipe. They are all so healthy and perfect! This was her first Quads, but not first kidding. Thier photos will be on our website tomorrow along with all the kidding photos, to let everyone see the birth of the Quads. It is funny really, they all four came out in the same minute, just like they were being dumped out of a cup, all in bags. Of course I had a big job, I was waiting for one and preparing to make sure the one was positioned correctly when all of a sudden I had them falling all over my hands. I was tearing the bags, cutting cords & applying iodine, sucking out mucus from the nose, which I was so prepared to use the syringe, but when they all four came out and seconds count and I heard the fluid being inhaled, I just used my mouth sucked and spit, and had to do mouth to mouth recesitation with two that were not breathing. They were all trying to breathe and were not doing so well in a full bag of liquid. I got them all in their own towels and gave colostrum that I milked from Reba in them right away, then dried them all off and let mama take over. Mama loved me being there, my whole family was there. Reba relaxed once I got into the kidding stall and after that it was all over. I cried of happiness because I was afraid I would goof up after Hoppy and losing one other that night because it was dead before it was born. It was too big to be delivered so today I am tired but look at my monitor I keep by my bed, and watch them all jumping on mama as she lays to rest. I gave mama warm water with a little malasses and she is a happy mom. She gets up to eat and drink and keeps checking to see that all her babies are accounted for. She will look at all four and the go back to eating. Thank you all for the emails and advice and just know I see these little miracles and I am so thankful at least some animals in this world are in such great hands like everyone on here. Our goats are loved. The help I get here, and the knowledge I get here is the best and so maybe vets should join us, then they can learn how to care for goats.

Hi Tina hope you arr getting over hoppy ok. I got this colostrum replacement recipe from a book but i used it for the last week for my nubian twins. Mom diddn't milk for all of them so all it is, 3 cups milk (only goat) 1 Tsp cod liver oil. 1 Tbsp Honey (or Corn suyrp or Karo) 1 egg. Mix every thing and heat (i strained the egg so no junky stuff gets in there) You can mix in some real Clostrum. for anibodies
Oh yea tell good job to Reba!

Tina, we had a boer cross doe that acted the same way towards her kids. s this her first kidding. If so she might just be scared of them.. Try milking the colostrum from her and bottle feed the new babies every few hours for the first couple of day. Maggie gave me wonderful milk replacement recipe. Its works GREAT. The kids are doing wonderful and they are almost 2 months old now. 1 Gal whole milk. 1 can evaporated milk and 1 cup of butter milk. Just pour enough of the whole milk oout to fit the butter and evap milk into the jug. Be sure to warm it up real good. Just a little warmer than you would heat a babbies bottle.. Like i said, the 2 kids of mine that we had to bottle feed with this recipe are doing great and they took right to the bottle.. Good luck and im sure Maggie will have more advise. She sure helped me alot. Just thought i would try to return the favor to someone else.

Our doe Reba finally had her quads. All healthy, all beautiful, and all girls but Reba has only one teat that has milk. What should I do because I know they need colostrum fst and also why is she pawing so hard at them? Does she not want them? This is the first time I have seen pawing at babies so I would love it if someone could advise me as to should I bottle feed them and when. They are getting Colostrum. I am milking Reba and giving it to each one. I post as an emergency because I do not want to let mama hurt them or let them go hungery
