Quick thinking for the makeshift splint! I kinda eyeball the diameter of the leg then go eyeball the PVC pipe options. I believe I have used 1.5 and 2 inch pipe for my pygmies... You want it sturdy enough to do the job after you cut it in half lengthwise and any curvature will help it fit better and stay in place better. Depending on the value of the doe to you call the vet. If she figures into your breeding program, call the vet, if you don't really care if she heals or not and aren't willing to spend money on her don't call teh vet and let nature take its course. Yes I would say her leg is BROKEN (guys fractured and broken are the same thing). She would probably benifit from an xray to be sure the bone ends match up, they likely don't at this point. If this is a front leg it is much more important as the front legs carry about 70 percent of the weight.

As for being ready for kidding you may need:
towels, strong iodine for dipping the navel, gloves if you need to go in and help, KY Jelly (vaseline is a poor OB lubricant), those are the immediate needs for actual kidding. When she kids milk a few squirts from each teat to be sure the waxy plug is out and the colostrum flows well. This will also leave a little scent helping the kids to find the teat faster. If you get some of the birth fluids on your hands let her lick them off, she will bond with you as well as her kids. Don't wipe all of the fluids off the kids, just the face and nose then let ehr do most of it (okay you cn help some). This is the first stage of bonding.

I like to have a weak kid feeding tube and syringe. This is a real life saver! Valley Vet and Jeffers both carry them for regual sized goats. Get a puppy feeding tube from Jeffers for pygmies.

Read the articles on the Article Page (link on the Goatworld Homepage), under the headings Kids and Kidding and Goats and Health. The one titels the Medicine Chest is very helpful with a list of supplies, on Kids and Kidding is detailed instructions for using a feeding tube (it is very hard to do it wrong!) The Fiasco Farm website at http://fiascofarm.com/goats/ has lots of good info on birthing, especially on how to read the tail ligaments. If the udder is just really starting to build she could be quite a ways from kidding. Some does build an udder a month before...

The bone end's didn't break through the skin (thankfully) I have not given her any more of the antibiotic, I wraped the rod before I put it against her leg (really good) and then straightened out the leg and finished wraping just past the joint. The PVC seems like an excellent idea...what size pipe do you recommend using? Since there were no bone's through the skin could she have just fractured the leg? Do I still need to contact the vet? I have been watching her closely and she has not tried to walk on that leg. At the time I was just trying to think/act quick with what items that I have here. Thank You So Much Maggie For Your Help!!

I have another question...I mentioned earlier that I have a doe that's getting ready to kid, well she is getting really swollen in the back end and her utter is taking shape. This will be first set of babies for both of us. I am not sure what med's and such supplies that I will definately need on hand? I am not sure when she was bred and am very nervous as to when she will have them, will I know in advance? I want to be there so she doesn't have trouble giving birth and making sure that the babies are nursing and are okay. Any pointer's that you may give to me on this? Thanks Alot Maggie!!

The dose for banamine is 0.1 cc per 10 pounds once or twice a day for 3 to 4 days max. She doesn't need an antibiotic unless the bone ends came through the skin. In which case splinting isn't going to help, she needs real veterinary attention.

You need to pad the rod you used, don't place it directly on the leg it will cause sores from rubbing. A better splint would be a piece of PVC (plastic) pipe cut in half lengthwise. Then pad the leg with an ace bandage, place the splint on top of the ace bandage being sure it goes just to the bottom of the hoof, to well above the break, then wrap the leg in vet wrap.

Of course this won't heal unless the bone ends match up, you may need to get a vet to set the leg and cast it.

I have a doe that's getting ready to kid and wanted to seperate her to her own pin, well one of my young does tried to jump the fence to be with the other doe and got her leg caught, I layed her down and felt an unusual movement in her leg, right at the joint! I gave her .20cc of banamine, and 3cc of Combi-Pen 48, and placed a steel rod on one side and used vet wrap to hold it in place, I am wondering if the medications were proper, and if there is something else that I can do to help her? I know that she is in severe pain! Please Help If You Can!!
