She did have an infection, maybe it was listeriosis or polio. The dose for pen G is at least 1 cc per 20 pounds TWICE a day. Underdosing does no good at all, making the bacteria antibiotic resistant.

Check her lower inner eyelids, they should be bright rosy or salmon pink. If they are pale or white she has a severe worm load (check all of your goats please). I recommend deworming with Ivomec Injectable for Cattle give at least 1 cc per 25 pounds but give it orally. Do this for 2 days and repeat in 2 weeks. Do not underdose it is very safe even for the pregnant doe.

Treat for polio, give 5 mg/pound of thiamin every 4 horus for the first 24 hours then 2 to 3 times aday for another 7 days. You can use Fortified B Complex which has 100 mg of thiamin per cc and give 1 cc per 20 pounds by SQ injection. If using the Regular B COmplex injectable you will have to give 1 cc per 2 pounds, check the amount of thiamin in each cc and dose accordingly.

You WILL have to get her up and draped over a hay bale 3 to 4 times a day for therapy to her legs or she will never be able to stand again. Stretch adn bend her legs and massage them to restore circulation. A goat that is down for only a few days is very likely never to be able to walk again.

Easy on the selenium you can overdose very easily.

If her brother is a buck he needs to be moved out. If he is a wether he is okay.

Help - Brownie is a nine month old toggenberg doe. About 2 1/2 weeks ago she became ill. Stiff neck, facial and neck swelling, inaudiable bleep, slit glassy eyes, stiff gait, temp. 105. Took her to vet (not a goat expert) determined she had severe throat infection, administered injection of 5cc long-lasting penicillian - ordered 2 add'l injections of 5cc every other day. Marked improvement at first - but did not clear entirely, I continued to administer 3cc of penicillian G, by injection for 3 add'l days - Neck swelling subsided, eyes cleared up, temp down and her appetite and personalality returned, but, she began to develop severe muscle weakness and loss of control, that has over past five days evolved into a comlete loss of use of her hind legs and limited use of the front. She contiues to eat and drink but is loosing weight. We began bottle feeding her water, with 400iu of vit E and 200mg of Selenium. She is housed with her twin brother and 5 yr old pregnant doe - both healthy. She eats hay, alphfa, & 10% sweet feed.

Help. My goat had triplets and something happend on the third day. Two of the goats were not standing this morning. I have been nursing them all day, but won't take a bottle so I used a dropper in side corner of mouth. One of the goats has the formula in lungs now and panting. The other one is not getting enough food and is slipping fast...will only open eyes and not walking. Any advise helpful. Tami

He is likely getting too cold even if he feels warmish. His tep should be about 102. Put your finger in his mouth to see if it feels cool. If it does you need to bring him inside and warm him up with a heating pad or a hair dryer. You can then tube feed or bottle feed some milk or colostrum from his dam. Newborns need to eat every 30 minutes or so to keep their blood sugar up. Once the blood sugar starts to fall they can't maintain their body temperature. You can give a bit of karo syrup or molasses and even a teaspoon to a tablespoon of coffee (the caffeine may help, only do this once).

If it has been very cold this could be frostbite, especially if the other kids like to suck on the ears and they get wet. Or it could just be irritation from being sucked on and being wet. Try vaseline, diaper rash ointment or a mild antibiotic ointment on them.

My 3 month old doeling twins both have what looks to be a big scab on the tips of both their ears. I don't know what it is but i am scared it is something serious. Please if anyone knows anything about this let me know!

He likely has pinkeye, kids can be virtually born with it. Treat with triple antibiotic eye ointment several times a day. You can also give LA 200 at 1 cc per 30 pounds by SQ injection once a day to help clear it up.

I have a boer baby 8 days old that has a closed eye. I noticed the eye problem soon after birth. He was born on hay straw. It is possible a straw stem poked him in the eye at time of birth. But I think more that it be some type of birth defect. An hour after birth he would lay around and be inactive unlike a normal kid. His eye would be shut and watering, his head tilted looking like he was in pain. Now 8 days later his eye still shows no improvment but he does not seem to be hurting as much. When I try to open the eye to examine it, the inner eye lids try to close over it. The eyeball looks very cloudy. I put a dab of Neobacimyx in the eye.
I am wondering if I should do anything else for him. Also wondering if he will be permantly blind in that eye. Is there any newborn diseases that would cause such a birh defect?
