Do give a probiotic or yogurt to replenish her digestive microbes. Give this once a day. Most of my goats will continue to eat some when they have polio, but as I said she went on for a while before real treatment began. At least she can chew and swallow. Each goat is different when it comes to polio, it affects different parts of the brain.

Maggie,

Emily did not look as good yesterday until the evening. She is urinating and the stool yesterday was pasty semi-formed. Once evening came she looked better and moved around more. She still will not willingly eat, but once you put food in her mouth she will chew and swallow. So I am giving her chopped grass hay and chopped alfalfa. Is this behavior on the way to normal?

Thank you Maggie. She really looked better this evening. Ate her oatmeal with a little coaxing. Walked around quite a bit this afternoon and actually stood on the fence and put her nose in the honeysuckle- didn't eat any, but looked interested. I'm more encouraged.

Go one more day of the every 6 hours treatment and then try cutting back to 2 to 3 times a day if she continues to improve. You might try giving just a bit more thiamin if the doe weighs over 100 pounds. Treatment should continue for at least a week, 7 to 10 days is better.

It may be several more days with a little improvement each day before you know she will probably recover. Since the treatment was delayed she will be slower to recover and there is a chance she may not come all the way back to fully normal. Some goats keep a slight head tilt or sway alittle when they walk after a bout with polio or listeria. Many goats will continue to improve a bit after treament stops as the brain swelling continues to go down and nerve tissue heals and new nerve pathways are set up. The body has an amazing capacity to adapt. It will all depend on if there was any permanent brain or nerve damage.

Barbara,

My doe seems some better. We have been giving her the thiamin and Penicillin every 6 hours. She is now taking an oatmeal/applesauce gruel with a syring occasionally licking at the mixture in the bowl. She is up more and is no longer doing the head pressing. She does still shake her head and when laying down does turn her head to the right side. Whe you look in her eyes she "is there" where before she was somewhat vacant. She still is not eating and drinking willingly and is very weak. When do you think I will know if she is going to be allright?
How much longer should I continue the penicillin and thiamin- it will be 48 hours this evening since I changed to this treatment.

Thanks for your help. I'm on my way now to get the PCN and more thiamin. I'll keep you posted.

Hello Deb,
If she were my goat I would definitely start her on Jump-Start Gel at 5ml. per day.
Fastrack Jump-Start Gel contains a source of live (viable), lactic acid-producing bacteria,
live yeast, dried chicory root, vitamins, enzymes and other components for use with all
classes of young ruminants.

Hi,
This doe has Listeri/Polio.

Now lets treat her this way.

!cc/20 lbs sq of Procaine Penicillin every 6 hours for 24-48 hours.
Next give her 500mg of Thiamin on the same schedule as the pen.

It is very important to get at least 1/2 gallon of water if she won't drink you will have to drench.
Give her a probiotics once a day for 3 days orally.Give her a good electrolytes 3 times a day.

I need help with my sick doe. She is a 3 yr old Tog. I've had her for six months- she is my first goat. 2 weeks ago she started acting a little off, not as active, a little off her feed. Then last Saturday she stopped eating and drinking all together. She has lost probably 15 lbs. Is very lethargic, when standing often will have her head down or lean it against something. Vital signs are all normal, lungs are clear, no cough, occasional diarrhea, some tremoring. Yesterday she followed my around the paddock, but today she just stands or lays. We finally found a vet up in PA that would treat her. We took her there on Tuesday, she stayed the night, we picked her up Wed pm. The vet doesn't really seem to know what is wrong with her. We have her on Thiamin injections once a day, SM2 tabs 2x day, syringe feed 30cc of Double A concentrate twice a day, pedialyte syringe feed several times a day. I am also tubing down a very watery mixture of alfalfa and water. Nothing seems to be working.

He did send off blood work to Washington, pending is CAE, Johnes, and Caseouslymp. It will be Monday before we get those back.

She has never been sick before, does not leave our property. Our other goat is fine.

Any ideas? I sure don't want to loose her.
Deb
