Congradulations.FOUR... BEEN THERE DONE THAT...I hope mom does well and the little ones all make it. Are you planning to bottle raise the babies? If the doe does well with her recovery maybe she can at least raise one or two of them. Bottle babies are just so sweet. Have fun and enjoy them. Sending my thoughts and prayers your way. Remember take care of your self also. Sandy & Kids

Have the vet give her some calcium too, she had symptoms of hypopcalcemia (often called pregnancy toxemia, milk fever) there at the end, the weak rear legs, stiff muscles and having 4 kids predisposes her to this. Can't hurt and will probably help her feel better. Congrats!

Update.

Yesterday Oreo started having increased difficulty walking, back legs/hooves really close together & taking very little steps with back legs. She was lying most of the time, not getting up very much. Today she started making whimpering noises, but no contractions. I took her to my vet for an emergency visit. Upon exam, she said her pelvis is really small and she did not feel as though she could deliver. Also she was concerned that she had lost some fluid. She did an emergency ceserean section, Oreo is doing fine and she is the proud mom of FOUR kids!!!!!!!!! Oreo is 2 yrs old, this was her first(and only - never again!)pregnancy. She had 4 billy kids. They are all still at the vets and I won't get to see them until tomorrow. One of the kids is weak and getting oxygen. Hopefully he will pull through. I will give another update later and post pics of the beautiful babies & mom.

Just wait for real labor. Everytime you go in you run the risk of introducing infection. The babies will come when its time.

This morning she does not seem to be having any contractions. There is no drainage either, the vulvular area is moist but no active drainage. She is eating & drinking as normal. She is walking around, doen't seem to be in any pain, but is a little figity. I wouldn't call it restless, because it is very minor. Could she have been having "braxton hicks" contractions?

If she is not in active labor, should I continue to check her cervical dilation at intervals or wait until active labor starts tnen only check if there seems to be a problem?

Thanks!

I checked her and her cervix is far back(very difficult to reach) and I was able to insert 2 fingers into the cervix and open them slightly - making her between 3 to 4cm dilated. I did not feel a kid down in the pelvis.

How many cm's does a goat dilate to? Women dilate 10cm's. I am a registered nurse and have labor & delivery experience, BUT goats are quite different than people. If this was a woman, I would say she is in early labor and it could be awhile. She has a scant amount of clear (egg white)discharge, no blood, no amniotic fluid.

She is walking around, browsing, eating feed, and drinking. Seems to be a little uncomfortable, having mild contractions, a good bit less than last evening/night.

Do I just wait now? Even though the anatomy is different, does the labor progress similar to humans? I've been a nervous wreck waiting! I feel like I'm the new mom!!

Thanks! Tina

I have never regretted going in and checking on a doe's progress. Put on glove, lube up really well (KY Jelly or something similaris best for this) and stick 2 fingers in as far as you can go to see if the cervix is open and if you feel a stuck kid. If the kid is not in position to enter the cervix the doe will not start pushing, but the uterus continues to contract and get smaller, making it that much harder to be able to assist.

Clear discharge if it is thick like egg white indicates birth is imminent (less than 3 hours away).

Still no kids. Through the day and evening yesterday she continued to have some clear discharge, appeared to be having mild to moderate contractions, paw the ground, lie down & get up often. She also continued to eat & drink. I stayed up with her until 1 am, nothing seemed to progress, so I went to bed. I checked on her at 6:30am and she is the same as last night. She is no acute distress, eating & drinking as usual, and calm.

Should I be worried that there is a problem? Or could she still be in early labor since this is her first? Or possibly false labor, but I wouldn't expect discharge with false labor?

If the mucus is clearish like egg white she should kid today and very soon. If the mucus is milky or white she could kid today or tomorrow. A thick white discharge is the mucus plug passing, a clear egg white (sometimes blood tinged) discharge is the beginning of labor. I have also noticed the udder willl get much bigger the day of or the day before kidding. Watch her closely. Once the water breaks and she begins pushing she should deliver within 30 minutes. If she goes longer you need to help.

My pygmy doe is due to kid anytime now. I only have an approximate date of conception(last week in Oct. or first week in Nov.), so I don't have a date to kid.

I am fairly new to kidding. This doe is the kid of my very first pygmy goats and is the only kid I've witnessed being born. So, I am a little (okay, VERY MUCH) nervous.

This morning, she is having clear mucus discharge with scant bright red blood spots. Her vulva area is very "poofy". Her udder is very swollen with milk. Her pelvic bones are more distingwishable(if that is a word!). She is not repeatedly lying/standing yet. She is browsing at this time and doesn't appear to be in any pain.

Any idea how long it will be until she is in active labor. I want to be with her when she kids, as this is her first time. And her mother needed assistance when she was born.

I will keep checking on her continuously, but am already a nervous wreck! So any advice would be greatly appreciated and will help me feel more calm.

Thanks!
Tina
