4 hours is too long. When a doe starts to push the babies should be delivered in about 15 minutes. If not you should go in and find out what is going on. Don't feel too bad, we have all made mistakes.

When is labor "prolonged?" I just spent 4 hours with a laboring 1st time doe, left for an hour and came back to find a still-born delivered, membranes intact, with the hind legs still in the birth canal. The doe stood up, the baby fell to the ground, lifeless. The only thing my uneducated eye could see was some edema around the head. Mom was moving around, eating, and I left for 2 hours. When I came back I found a second kid, this one lifeless also, but cleaned off on one side. Now I feel remiss in not checking her vaginally when she was in labor but I thought 4 hours of labor was not unusual. I have been hesitant to be invasive without good reason. Where did I go wrong?

Yes this doe needs help. If she has toxemia she is likely hypocalcemic (has low calcium) and calcium is vital of muscle contractions. I would see about getting this doe to a vet, ASAP.

Hi, have a young 4Her with a first time doe who started contractions at noon- they have now stopped and there has been no progression. HELP!! I told her to lube up and manually tickle the cervical area to see if she could jumpstart things. This same doe has been showing signs of and been treated for toxemia. Thanks!!
