Now what do I have? I have a goat with sores on the mouth and up the face by the nose. I thought she had a snotty nose till I looked closer! I am really sick of problems. Can someone help me with this? AND I have one with lumps under the jaws. We just wormed with Valbazen on Saturday. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Lila, This sounds like sore mouth to me.I put Bluekote on my goats that had this on the bottom lip.I read that it will last about or up to 2 weeks.Once they get it they usually dont get it again. You can use a bag balm (aniseptic)on it to keep it moistend. If they get them really bad they will not eat.I know how they feal I have a cold sore now,It must be going around.Pam

Hi Pam, Well the vet here says it's not sore mouth. She says it is an alergic reaction to something. I sure hope she is right. She is just learning about goats but works with horses all the time. It's more up the goats nose that on the mouth. We got some bad dusty course hay and I think that set this off. I could be wrong tho I guess. - response from Lila

I am going through the same exact thing!! Actuially, just had the vet come out an hour ago. Basically, here's my story: I had introduced soremouth into my herd either from contaminated clothing from work (we have sheep and occasionally soremouth as we vaccinate for it) or from a show a few weeks ago. My Buck got it first, pimples all over.. in about 2-3 weeks they healed well.. then everyone else got it. My wether got soremouth the worse, scabs all over his nostrils, mouth and lips and on his underbelly where he can reach to scratch. He got run down, and had a slight respiratory infection due to the stress of this all. I treated the respiratory infection with LA-200, 3 injections over 5 days. I go to turn him out with the boys the other day and he stumbles to the ground. What happen is that he wasn't eating as well as usual due to competition and his mouth being sore. when I have an animal go down, a vet call in imminent! I had to isolate him, am giving him a shot of Vitamin B complex, he got some Probios today, and is getting 9ml's for 3-5 days of Pen G to fight any secondary infection that may form in his sores. I also gave him molasses in his water to give him some more energy, vet suggested propolyene glycol. (He was wobbly and run down since he's not eating well). The main problem with soremouth is that the animals go off feed. You want to keep them eating well so the rumen dosn't shut down (a major problem). Keep in mind, YOU CAN GET SOREMOUTH, its ZOONOTIC! so wear gloves if you're putting any ointment on it. I've heard of people putting everything from vasalene mixed with iodine on the lips, to plain vasalene or even neosporin. Just remember -wear gloves!! Best of luck for your doe. Keep her eating! -Nat's Little Bit

Hi Nat, Thanks for the advise. My hubby did give her a shot of LA200 on monday and another one tonight. He said that she has had this off and on for awhile. It looks more like a notty nose that has hardened by the nostrils and a couple sores by her mouth. I don't know if this is what the problem is. I think I may take her to the vet tomorrow and see. Most vets around her doesn't know about goats. She will be just guessing and I suppose I can do that..guess I mean. Anyway, Lyman said she had this same thing last summer once and he peeled some of it off because he didn't think she could breath good. Guess it isn't contagious because he didn't get anything then. Now we have one all swallen up under the jaw besides. Think maybe it is bottle jaw but not sure. Vet thinks it may be something else. All problems we brought home with the last bunch of goats we bought.
