At 3:30pm on March 19th, my daughter Rachel came in to say that Stella our Saanen goat, was in labor. My kids and I gathered to watch. The first baby was presented with only the head and no feet of any kind showing. We determined (with a call to a neighbor that raises sheep) that she would not be able to deliver these kids with out help so the attempt was made to assist. First attempt failed. A phone call was made to another neighbor who raises goats for assistance. She was on her way over when The bag of waters broke. Stella pushed but made no progress, and at that point the kids head seemed to be sucked back in. I was afraid he would suffocate now that his bag was broke. I then made a second attempt to help. This time I was able to hook a leg and get it under the chin to the kid. She then pushed and delivered the kid with apparent ease. She proceeded to clean that kid when the second was presented with only one foot under the chin. Our neighbor Bea was here at this point and about to assist when the kid came out on its own. Stella seems to be fine both kids were bucks and were taken to be fed in the house. One that was born first seems to have water in his lungs most likely form the ordeal of his birth he aspirated some fluid but both seemed in good health other wise. Now I have some 'friends' Telling me I should have let nature take its course and she would have been fine. Is this true did I interfere when I shouldn't have?
