I am assuming that you are talking about a small backyard flock and not a commercial chicken business. The pros and cons would be quite different. I don't know of a web site, although I would be surprised if there was NOT one. There is a web site for about everything. The backyard flock can be fun if you just enjoy having chickens around. I have never seen a profit that could be made from a small flock. Chickens do not lay eggs year round under these conditions, therefore there will be times where you are feeding these birds and getting nothing in return. Feed prices that you will have to pay, keeps you from making a profit from either the egg production or the meat. It is cheaper to buy eggs and chicken meat at your local grocer than it would cost for you to raise them. Those are the cons. The pros would be that you would have very fresh eggs and meat that you processed yourself. As there are goats that have been bred for meat and those bred for milk, there are differences within chickens. Some chickens have been developed for egg production and those that have been developed for meat production. Egg layers are "skinny" with very little meat on the bones, but are excellent layers that don't eat as much feed. If meat is what you are looking for, you will need to have a heavy breed chicken, they eat a great deal more, but produce much more meat. A good "all round" chicken is the ole Rhode Island Red. This breed has been around forever and are good layers and make good fryers as well. Maybe this helps a little.
