had this happen a time or two as well. What really works great for padding for the splint or cast is, ok... don't laugh, femmine pads, nice cusjion. I also applied comfrey paste to the area and that helped too. Comfrey paste aids in healing and reducing swelling. I had never thought of it until someone on one of the lists i am on suggested it. I also recall giving her anitbiotis as well, forgot dosage. hope this helps.
