Victoria, this is one of my favorite subjects. I actually believe that CAE positive does don't show positive until times of stress actually increase the titer in the does blood so they can be read as positive from the titer rise. I also believe that just like human mothers who have HIV or AIDS can have positive children born through placental breakdown, why can't goats who are positive also have this same type of breakdown of the placenta which gives the kids CAE virus in utero? Even the german measles can be given in utero in humans! Makes you think! I purchase stock from other folks for my own use very infrequently and it is usually in the form of bucks. In does, I go after does born from tested negative animals. I will run a CAE test on anything that I sell, and I also offer the folks to come and take the doe to their own vet before that sale. But I sell animals with a CAE negative status only, and you are welcome to call my vet, she has pulled the blood, checked the tattos and sent the blood on all animals of mine for sale. If all of this doesn't satisfy the buyer, the go buy somewhere else. I don't want the does back for any reason once they leave since I couldn't put them back in the pen with their herd mates. Forget CAE what about CL,. and Johnes, and even something as benign as the hoof rot virus some folks have in their soil, I want none of that on my place! After 14 years in Nubains, I have a very good reputation, and ruining your name by selling positive animals will run you out of business fast! Vicki
