Hi Koda,

You might find it hard to believe, but the mix of motor oil and paint is not too far fetched - at least in my opinion. There are several "types" of paint that could be used effectively but I think what you are going for is durability right? Especially from the elements.

You have alot of water based or ammonia based paints that will work just as well but your oil based paints are going to preserve the wood longer and are less likely to chip or flake off the wood. With an oil base, you can pretty much apply it and it will soak into the wood more readily. The drying time is usually the most difficult though especially with regular motor oil. It will take quite a few hot days of sunshine to get the paint to really set up and cure.

Now I do know that they make a red barn paint that works pretty well - I'm sure it also comes in black too. You get those boards soaked with an oil or base and put the barn paint on and you'll have a pretty decent finish for years to come.

By the way, what you might want to look into is an "industrial coating" rather than a household paint. Industrial coatings are the type of paints like dipping stains for t-posts (the red and the silver - extremely durable in all weather - oil base for the most part).

Hope this helps,

Best regards,

Gary
