Coyote hanging around the farm

Posted by Nat on October 09, 2001 at 17:24:54:

Well, tonight has been the second sighting of Little Bit Farm's newest addition.. and uninvited guest "Mr. Coyote." He was spotted a few nights ago... then all day today hanging around the hay fields, and garden... heading towards the boys' pen and barnyard. We don't usually see anything in our area, and especially not during mid-day.

My farm is home to free-range chickens, turkeys and of course the goats. My kids are pastured next to the barn, which is by the road so I don't think that he'd come this close.. Yet... and I took the precaution of locking up my turkeys inside the barn tonight to the tune of getting my head banged up by strong turkey wings.. (when's thanksgiving again?) The boys are fenced in by field fence with 2 strands of hot wire -low and high, and they are quite big.

Should I be worried about the safety of the boys and everyone else??? I plan on running some more hot wire tommorow and then putting up some of that electro-net sheep fencing as a peremiter guard around the outside of the kid and turkey pen.

Has anyone else had coyote problems? Will a single one go after an adult goat or 3 bucks?? or is it usualy sick, weaker animals??

Just wondering before I start cleaning out the guns.

-Nat' s Little Bit

p.s. poison baiting is out of the question as we have farm dogs and cats. Also, rabies has been a problem in our area time to time

Thanks everyone!
