Hi Pam,
I thought I had an article about this but I can't find it now for the life of me. So I'll have to try and go from memory here.
Parrot mouth aka "carp mouth" is an inherited condition. It occurs because of malformation of the teeth which doesn't interfere with barn feeding handicaps them them in browsing the pasture.
What actually causes it has been attributed to poor bloodlines, in-breeding and other unknown factors (poor fetal development, etc.).
