I almost wonder if animals can understand what is going on and grieve. A few weeks ago I had put my old horse down, and my first Toggenburg. Every now and then you can see the other old horse out in the field looking over the fence, just staring out into space, or just wanding around almost looking for his buddy of 10 years. He's got another companion, but there are those morning that just make you want to cry when he's out in the paddock, alone looking off.

As for the goats, I'm not sure they really notice Dalila's absence - its more like me during milking time, or if a friend comes over and asks how she's doing and her daughter. Somedays I still find myself looking for her inthe herd. Loss is part of farming... a lesson that is hard to learn and accept.
