Hi Helene,

Well, I won't claim to know everything, but I know some things. Personally, I'd try to cover both of the holes here - too easy for infection to get in the sinus cavity through either. This is going to be the toughest part I think you'll find out soon enough - keeping them covered.

The Naxcel that you mentioned, that to my knowledge is primarily used for respiratory illnesses such as Pastuerella - pneumonia. It can also be used for e-coli. I'm not sure that it would do you any good for this situation.

The LA200 will work - it is oxytetracycline based but is has one drawback in that it stings when injected. You won't make friends with your goat giving this one. I use either Agricillin 200 or Biomycin. In many forms these will come in a non-sting version and will provide ample protection.

If you can't get either of these or do not have any of the LA200 left, then of course you can go with the penicillin first. From what you described, the Combicillin should do the trick. Depending upon the weight of your goat, and I'm thinking it is going to be less than 50 pounds?? -you might try 2 to 3 cc's per day, subq for 5 days. Be sure to follow this up with Probios or some plain yogurt.

Really, I think the oxytetracycline would be the best choice here - but I'm no vet so I cannot guarantee it. My thinking is simply infection - a broad range of infections which are largely centered around flies, parasites and dirt. Just as an added precaution, you may want to consider getting some of that spray and applying it over the bandage and the whole covering to thwart bacteria.

On the oxytetracycline, the dosage I use most often for smaller goats is 2 to 3 cc's. I generally use these dosages on anything goat less than 100 pounds. A young kid - if I ever need to give an injection, I usually only give 1/2 to 1 cc. It is just easier for me to remember the two particular antibiotics this way. Anything else such as CD/T, Nuflor, Naxcel - I would definitely recommend either going by the dosage on the vial or by a veterinarian recommendation. Too little margin for error on certain drugs.

If you ever get to the point where you cannot find certain items, please let me know - some of these I can get and ship to you - some of them would not ship so well - especially if they need refrigeration. You might want to check with a vet to see if he or she is willing to help you out with the hard to find antibiotics you can't get elsewhere.

Something I should have mentioned in my email response before that I'm sure you already know is the feeding and nutrition of your goat. Of course feeding is always important in any case but I'd be sure to feed him a good well balanced diet chock full of the essential viatamins and minerals. He needs them now more than ever since the ultimate goal of course is to encourage and stimulate growth and healing.

Anyway, don't worry too much about the posting - heck, I'm guilty of it too. I realize that a person only has so much time in a day to get things done. I wish we all had more time. But I know you'll be posting again regularly soon enough when things calm down.

Please let me know how this situation progresses and I'll try to be of help if you need it.

Best regards,

Gary
