Helen,
What breed of cows are they. They must be for beef. It definitely sounds like mastitis to me. You really have to be agressive with it or the cow will lose her whole bag. THe bacteria will kill it. The bag won't fall off but it will not make milk in the future. I have a cow with a dry quarter. She still has three functioning so that is enough for raising a baby. The mastitis treatment tubes say to do it twice. I read on a goat site to do it five times at 12 hours intervals and to also give the animal systemic injections of another kind of antibiotic so you are covering all bases. And, like Karen said you have to empty out all four quarters at least twice a day. Let us know how it works out. If it is that chunky I would wonder how much the calf is getting.....
Later gater,
Dalice
