Caleb and I trimmed "Cassy" up tonite he was such a good helper we went to McDonalds (BBBLLLLAAAAAHHHHHHH) Anyway the foot for the most part had drained, and you can see where it broke through just behind the hoof and above the heel. Unfortunatly the infection has spread further than we first thought. The sole is red and swollen and the infection is up the sides of the hoof wall on both claws. The pen they were in was very wet Iam sure that was helping the infection worsen. We trimmed as much of the infection out as possible. Soaked the foot in bleach water to get any nasty stuff off the hoof and foot itself. Then while I finished chores Caleb held her and kept her foot in Epsome salts for like 20 mins. He did so good : ) and she seemed to enjoy it. We opted not to wrap it as getting the mosture out is what we want not holding it in. I did however rinse it with peroxide (it did not bubble, that should be good), then I gave her a good dose of Penn. and coated the foot with bag balm. Figured that would keep stuff from sticking to it, allow some drainage if needed and keep at least a bit of antibiotic on it. I may be over my head on this one, I plan on calling the vet and may have her taken in on Wed. The shearer is comming out tomorrow nite and once the big girls are sheared Andy and I will be worming/vacc/ and doing hoof duty ( I can handle the 100-150# goats but a sheep @220+ no way). There is two other ewes that have been having lamness problems Andy is concerned about hoof rot. So far the goats and horses are fine but they are in a much dryer area. One other thing that is weird part of Cassys hoof seems to be sloughing off. Not all the way up maybe 1/4" of it where the infection is the worst. On the up side the cornet band and the rest of the hoof looks fine. Andy says it is not founder. Anyway if anybody has any help they can offer on hoof rot or what they think about this foot let me know. Could be it's just a really evil abbcess???? Gotta go I am wooped.
