Hi Kerrie, As others have said I think it is a personal decision as what will work best for you. We have 8 strand high tensel fence with electric on 6 strands on all pastures. We also have cyottes, wild dogs and lots of deer. We have a llama that we got at the age of apx.1 yr. (nutered of course), He is quite protective of "his herd". He is gentle with the goats and babies but will not tolerate anything else in the fields with them. The cats have learned to "stay out" He kills every ground hog that attempts to enter his turf. We purchased him from a very "honest" breeder, his recomendation was to only have 1 llama with a herd unless you had hundreds of goats,as if you have more than one they are not as attentive to their goats but will go off as a seperate herd to themselves. He has been easy to care for so far, very healthy. However he hasn't come to their rescue as Helen's "Ralph" has and I am sure I can not ever expect him to,He dosen't spit as some of them do,but he does hum!!!!!!!! I will be honest though, I hope someday to get a Great Pyr. LGD in addition to our llama, only because I feel I need it to fill a void(but thats another story). All Great pyrs. that I have had the chance to observe and their owners have nothing but praise for them, except through the puppy years ,which they say last possabily 2 yrs.During that time you need the patience of Jobe. Good luck in your choice, keep us informed as how things go for you when you decide. Gloria
